    Moros y Cristianos in Jávea

Five days of elaborate parades, a dramatic landing of the Moors on Arenal beach and fireworks lighting up the bay — Jávea's Moros y Cristianos is unforgettable.

Held every year in the second half of July, Moros y Cristianos commemorates the medieval clashes between Moorish and Christian armies on the Spanish coast. In Jávea the festival is staged with enormous costumes, brass bands and a level of detail that rivals the better-known Alcoy version.

Most events take place along the Arenal seafront, making it easy to combine the festival with a beach holiday. The parades are completely free to watch.

    Highlights of the festival

Each company (filà) parades in elaborate handmade costumes, accompanied by its own band. The week builds towards the great battles and the symbolic surrender of the castle on the beach.

    • La Desembarcada – the night landing of the Moorish troops on Arenal beach, with fire and effects.
    • Grand parades of the Moorish and Christian sides through Arenal.
    • Mock battles in front of a wooden castle built on the seafront.
    • Fireworks over the bay on the final night.
    • Daily street parties around the filà headquarters (kabilas).

    When and where

The festival usually takes place in the second half of July; exact dates change each year. All main events are along Avenida del Mediterráneo and the Arenal beachfront. The town hall publishes the full programme in early summer.

How to enjoy it as a visitor

Arrive early for the big parades — the seafront fills up hours in advance. Bring water, comfortable shoes and respect the parade route. The landing on the beach is best seen from the Arenal promenade or from a terrace nearby.
